Ecology - John the Apostle successfully win an Adelaide and Mount Lofty NRM Board’s School Environment Grant

On Tuesday 23 June, our newly appointed Environmental Leaders, Nelson, Lucas, Sarayha, Jessica, Evie and Daniel visited Galilee Catholic School. We were shown around the school by their Eco-literacy Coordinator and some students to check out and ask questions about their redeveloped frog pond. Work will start on the St Johns Native Garden and Frog Pond early next term.

At the start of Term 1, worked closely with Jeremy Gramp from NRM (Natural Resource Management) to apply for an Adelaide and Mount Lofty NRM Board’s School Environment Grant.

Late last term, we received a phone call to offer us a School Environmental Grant to undertake our project entitled, “St John the Apostle Parish School Biodiversity Frog Pond and Native Garden.” This will be built near the cubby house, in the existing Butterfly Garden.

The financial support for this project is made possible by the NRM Levy paid by all ratepayers within the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Rangers Region.

I am really excited to start working with the Environmental Leaders and Jeremy Gramp from NRM Education on the St Johns Native Garden and Frog Pond early next term.

St John the Apostle – St Dominic’s Day – Walk for Water.

On Monday 3 August, St John’s students will be taking part in a ‘Walk for Water’ as part of our St Dominic celebrations.  We will be educating our students about social justice and ethical issues within our world and empowering them to change the lives for people who are less fortunate than ourselves.

The ‘Walk for Water’ will start with different year levels walking for different amounts of time whilst carrying different sized containers of water.

Students will also be required to gather sponsors for the Walk for Water.

The children will be sponsored for each lap they walk around the perimeter of the school for the following amount of time:

•             Year 3/4 and 5/6 students will walk for 60 minutes.

•             Year 1/2 students will walk for 45 minutes.

•             Reception students will walk for 30 minutes.

Teachers will record how many laps the children walk. If you were to sponsor a student 50 cents a lap and they walked ten laps in 60 minutes, the sponsor would then have to pay $5.   Alternatively, a donation would be appreciated instead of an amount per lap.

Sponsorship forms were sent  home in Week 10, Term 2.

50% of the money raised will be donated to Catholic Charities, the other 50% to a yet to be determined Dominican charity.

Sacramental Program – SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

As stated in my last report, unfortunately, due to COVID -19 restrictions, preparation has to be deferred until further notice. Celebration of Sacrament of Reconciliation DEFERRED by order of Archdiocese Office.

After meeting with Fr Josy in Week 9, we hope to have more information as to when we can start the Sacramental program.

Hopefully, the Sacramental Program will start at the beginning or Term 3. This is the same time that most Catholic school and parishes will start their Sacramental Programs.

I am very excited to be part of the Sacramental journey with our students.

God bless,

Jamie Mulcahy - APRIM (Assistant Principal Identity and Missions)
